|SOME NOTES ON MEDIEVAL ENGLISH GENEALOGY|
Volume 12, part 1, page 110 (as modified by volume 14):
JOHN DE SOMERY m. Hawise, sis. and h. of Gervase, and da. of Ralph PAYNEL [see PAYNELL] who had inherited the barony of William FitzAnsculph. John d. before Gervase. Hawise surv. him, and m., 2ndly, Roger DE BERKELEY.(g)
Dugdale, Mon., vol. v, p. 204.
As Hawise's subsequent husband Roger Berkeley was living in 1196/7, he could not have been Roger IV de Berkeley of Dursley (d. 1190), as has sometimes been stated [e.g. Sanders, English Baronies, p. 113, Keats-Rohan, Domesday Descendants, p. 321]. He is identified by John Smyth of Nibley as the son and heir of Nicholas, the son of Robert Fitz Harding [Lives of the Berkeleys, vol. 1, p. 46].
