This page contains an index of coroners' inquests for Northamptonshire from roll JUST 2/107 which The National Archives date from 21 Edward I to 9 Edward II. The roll includes the hundreds of Nassaburgh, Guilsborough, Wymersley and Towcester. Personal names and placenames are included in this index and brief details of events are provided in many cases. The roll is generally in good condition although some membranes are difficult to read due to damage and/or discolouration. Lists and values of chattels of suspected felons or of items that contributed to a person's accidental death are often given.

A few inquests, writs and appeals appear translated in Selden Society volume IX (consulted) and Associated Architectural Societies' Reports and Papers volume XXXII (not consulted).

The National Archives believes that JUST 2/120 and JUST 1/640 or parts thereof were probably originally parts of this roll.

Image (AALT)		 29 Ed1 Watford Nicholas Mundevile Richard Mundevile & Nicholas his brother were playing a game with stones and Richard's stone fell upon Nicholas's head causing a small wound. After three days he had a stroke and later died. Jurors say that Richard did not kill Nicholas but he had fled out of fear to the church of St Peter at Watford. The same Richard confessed he was a thief having stolen a blue coat worth 18 pence at Barby. He abjured the realm and was assigned to Dover. His chattels were a flail worth a half penny and a cap and a coat each worth a penny. Full translation in Selden Society vol. IX 1895.

Thornby William brother of Henry atte Leyton de Gildeborou took refuge in the church 29th July 1309 saying he was a thief and had stolen sheep, chickens and geese and more at Coten juxta Gildesborou and abjured the realm. He said for three years past he had associated with one Robert of Essex and had fled. He was assigned to Dover. His chattels were the tools of a linen weaver worth 4d, a russet courtepy worth 6d, a sickle worth 4d. Guilsborough.

Image (AALT)		 5 Ed 2 Yelvertoft John le Soutere William de Wenligton chaplain at Yelvetoft sent John his clerk to the house of John le Soutere to buy a candle for a penny. John would not send the candle without the money and William took a stick and struck John on the head such that his brains flowed out. William fled to the church where Juliana daughter of William Cranford of Yelvertoft found him and her pledges were from Henry of Piddington and William of Cranford both of Yelvertoft. Daundelyn that he had killed William son of William de Gerbirg de (Southwyke)[1]. He abjured the realm and was assigned to Dover. His chattels were a tunic worth 6 pence and a supertunic worth 12 pence, a girdle worth 1 penny and hood worth 1 penny. [[1] AASR&P gives Norwich).

He was working on a cart of hay and fell to the ground on his head. Misfortune. The cart was worth 3 shillings, the mare 2 shillings, the hay 6 pence and the harness 3 pence.

Simon brother of John Blunt John struck Gilbert in the stomach with a knife and both John and Simon fled quickly. Simon fled to Makesey church, John (was captured and taken to) gaol at Peterborough. Long list of chattels given including his chattels at Sutton and in his house and at the house of William of Taylington. Gonora his wife had 5 quarters of barley. Matilda le Blound had 3 quarters. He had stolen a blue surcoat from Katherine the servant of Roys Rernoun He abjured and was assigned to Dover. His chattels were a red coat worth 12 pence and a blue tunic worth 6 pence and a silk purse worth 3 pence.

He confessed to many thefts and abjured the realm and was assigned to Dover. His chattels were a coat worth 9 pence, a tunic worth 5 pence, shoes worth 2 pence ad a hood worth 1d.

He had stolen 3d in silver, a half penny, a curtepy of russet worth 12d, a blue tunic worth 10d, and a blue cap worth 2d. John Blakwelle was sent to Dover and John de Henstede to Portsmouth. John of Blackwell had a blue tunic worth 10d, shoes worth 1 and a half pence and a hood worth 2d. John of Henstead had a tunic worth 2d, a hood worth 2d, shoes worth 1d, a horn worth 1d and a girdle worth a half penny.

Seven head wounds made with a staff or so it appeared. In the evening hours in the street from Walton to Peterborough at Cropmulne? John Scharp de Walton. The staff was worth 1 penny and the bailiff of the Liberty of Peterborough is ordered to arrest John Scharp who has no chattels.

In the evening hours in the street between Walton and Peterborough at Copmulne he met unknown thieves. The staff was worth a half penny. The thieves fled and had no chattels.

The body showed one head wound made by a hatchet or so it appeared. John had been beating his wife Emma who called for her brother John Reeve de Pylesgate who with Emma's approval struck John with the axe worth 1 penny. Both were arrested.
